Day 11 - Thirty Days

Day 11 - Favorite TV shows

It's Thursday. Is it 9pm yet? Did you see last week's episode?! Holy cow!!!

I also enjoy the Law and Order shows, and just started watching reruns of Bones. Love Supernatural, but I tend to catch up on that over the summer when other things are in reruns. When all else fails, a syndicated episode of any of the Star Trek series' will do just fine. :)

Day 10 - Thirty Days

Day 10 - Something you're afraid of

Heights. Deathly afraid.

I took this photo from atop the Hoover Dam, looking West, in 2006. I think I recall holding the camera over my head and closing my eyes, hoping that I got a pic worth keeping. I knew I'd probably never be there again and it was my one chance. You laugh, but at my old church? I wouldn't even go up in the balcony.

Day 9 - Thirty Days

Day 9 - A picture of your friends

This is a cop out. Sort of. I'm afraid I'll leave someone out, so I'm using this photo I found at Facebook. Early to mid-70's (no later than 1974 or early '75). We were besties in Middle School and here we are all graduated or possibly about to be.

Joanne, Me, Ellen.
After almost forty years we found each other again. :)

Days 7 & 8 - Thirty Days

Give or take a couple of months. You know what they say about good intentions.

Day 7 - Favorite movies

I think is the one that stumped me last time. We are not movie-goers. We work long hours, usually odd hours, and by the time the weekend comes we don't feel like bothering to go out. Plus there are all my other distractions - the internet, digital scrapping, writing (on rare occasions any more), being a chauffeur to a carload of teenage girls ... you see where I'm going with this.

The hubby has his list of about 5 favorites (give or take a few dozen) that we watch over and over and ... No, let me rephrase that. HE watches them over and over and over while I call out supportive things from my chair at the pc. The Ten Commandments, The Great Escape, Field of Dreams, The Natural, any of the Harry Potter series, Sweeney Todd, Star Wars (any of them usually in succession), Star Trek (see previous comment) .... the list goes on and on, just like Rose's heart does in the Titanic theme song. Yes yes, he watches that one too even though we all know how it ends. (Psst, the ship sinks!)

The one that I didn't name is one that I will always stop and sit for. We've watched it so many times that my Marine Son and I were texting each other lines from it just this week.

"There's no crying in baseball!" "Use your head. It's that thing thee feet above your ass." "Anybody ever tell you you look like a penis with a little hat?" "Mule!" "Nag!"

Oh the hours we could spend (and did, while my hubby was in ICU last fall) tossing movie lines back and forth. Both sons, my daughter, and me. Good times!

"A League of Their Own". Classic Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and best supporting roll ever - Jon Lovitz.

Go. Watch!

Day 8 - A place you've traveled to

I can't pick a favorite. Toronto, NYC, Jamaica, San Francisco, Los Angeles, our cross country trip from L.A. to Miami in 2006. That last one included Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Roswell New Mexico, The Alamo, New Orleans ...

I'm ready to go again, just let me pack a bag.

Day 6 - Thirty Days

Day 6-A picture of something that makes you happy

November 21st 2010

Two weeks earlier he was on full life support. Two weeks earlier we were making very tough decisions and wondering what a future without him would be like. As his shirt says, God is Good All the Time.

Days 4 & 5 - Thirty Days

Lucky you, you get two for the price of one today!

I thought about yesterday's post a lot, and then spent time looking for a specific photo and by the time I gave up on posting a picture my brain was fried and I went to bed.

Day 4-Your parents

My parents were born and raised in neighboring towns in southern West Virginia. Daddy was on the football team in high school, and I think mama was a cheerleader. If not officially, then she was his biggest unofficial cheerleader. *g* They both belonged to 4-H, played tennis, daddy was a lifeguard and worked during the Great Depression in the WPA doing road work. He and mama eloped over the state line to Virginia in 1939, and my sister was born a year later.

He worked at a diner for a while and then moved the three of them to Miami where he took a job flipping burgers downtown at a new place called Royal Castle. By the time he retired in 1969 he was third Vice President of the company and had taken an active part in the design of the newer shops. :)

Mama was a housewife. She did all the requisite things - cooking, sewing, not a lot of cleaning (I inherited that particular trait) and doing club things. Woman's Club, Garden Club, Civic Club, PTA, Girl Scouts - you name it, she was involved. When I was in school we would go out after school for a soda, or a piece of cake at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Little River, or to the Neisner's 5&10 at Biscayne Shopping Plaza. It was the best uninterrupted time we could find to talk about my day. That's the kind of mom she was.

My dad passed in 1978 when I was 23, mama died in 1993 when I was 39. They both left quite a legacy.

Day 5-Your favorite recipes

I think I'll use an image or two for this one. :)

Day 3 - Thirty Days

Day 3-Your first love

Let's see now. Do I still blush 50 years later? Probably! I was six years old and the first time I saw him kiss someone on television I turned bright red. I had a Dr. Kildare notebook that I didn't even take to school with me because it was such a treasure, it was only meant for staring at longingly in my bedroom. *sigh*

But then the next year, in second grade, I got engaged to a classmate on the school bus. ;)

Day 2 - Thirty Days

Day 2-Meaning behind your blog name

I think that coming up with a screen name is one of the hardest things in the world to accomplish, but deciding on a clever title for a blog? Impossibly daunting! If you look around you'll see so many with clever plays on words, descriptive of the subject matter, of the writer. I'm not sure exactly how I settled on Tales From the Sunny South, but it reflects where I'm from and currently live, and it also doesn't pigeonhole my blog writing into one tiny corner of my life.

If you read back -and please do!-you'll find photos, memes, musings on life, pleas for heal for friends ... little of everything.

That's what's here on Tales from the Sunny South.
